[[yes, I know this is old news. I started writing it at work, and filed it away as draft when work intruded, and forgot about it. I'm getting old. Deal with it.]]
All of the commenters on the referenced sites are focusing on the obvious, frivolous application presented, and missing the possibilities that this implies.
Did you ever drool over Dillenger's desktop interface in the movie
Tron? I did. Sure, it was faked, and limited by the available technology, but it was still cool. Think about it. Your computer desktop is the top of your desk. Move documents around by dragging your finger across the desk. Type using a virtual keyboard that can be as customized as you want. Documents can be actual size -- no more guessing based on inaccurate in-application rulers.
Of course, some of us would need a separate little table on which to put our food and drinks, to minimize the chances for spills. And the touch-sensitive surface would have to be customizable to account for my drumming habits (it would be bad to accidentally reformat my drive just because I was playing along with "YYZ").
There are pundits and user interface thinkers that claim that the desktop metaphor is dead, that it has served its purpose but outlived its usefulness. I disagree. I think that it has never been allowed to flourish in its best environment. It has always been limited by the boundaries of a monitor display.
I believe that, if someone sees this for what it could be, I am one step closer to achieving my dream desk. If only I can afford it when/if it becomes reality...
